The Hom Lab at the University of Mississippi is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to help lead a new NASA-funded project to study the biology of desiccation tolerance in microbes.
The successful candidate should have a record of research productivity/getting-things-done, project management and leadership, and successful mentorship of junior trainees. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work well with others. The expected commitment is for three years, with the potential to extend depending on annual performance and lab funding.
Requirements upon hire:
• a Ph.D. in biology or related field
• a strong track record of scholarly writing and publications in peer-reviewed journals
• excellent wet-lab bench skills
• demonstrated proficiency in molecular biology/genetic engineering of microbes
• experience in experimental biochemistry; experience working with RNA and/or proteins is a plus

This project will involve generating multi-omics datasets from environmental samples and isolating/manipulating DNA, RNA, proteins, and metabolites. It will also involve leveraging machine learning approaches for analysis. A familiarity with multi-omics and machine learning approaches is preferred but not required. However, the successful candidate should be prepared and interested in becoming well-versed in the methods to be used and developed. Candidates should be highly motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a multi-institutional team involving collaborators at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (WA) and the Einstein College of Medicine (NY).

Major Duties / Responsibilities
The selected candidate will:
- Conduct R&D projects and lead the expansion of R&D in PSR to take advantage of our multidisciplinary capabilities, multimodal strengths, and unique tools and capabilities;
- Develop new research programs with state and national agencies as well as with utilities and system operators (ISOs, RTOs);
- Lead and manage large technical projects related to power system cyber-physical security;
- Guide work of and mentor junior staff members;
- Network and develop collaborative R&D with other groups and divisions internally and with DOE, industry, and utilities;

Qualifications
The position requires:
A Ph.D. plus a minimum of 5 years of experience or Master's degree plus a minimum of 10-15 years of experience in electrical engineering, with experience in SCADA/EMS systems, power system communication, control and protection.
Thorough understanding of power system operation is required. Extensive knowledge is desired in areas of: electrical power system practices, principles and methods; restructured market practices and methods; IEEE and NERC standards, and issues related to power system integration and reliability.
Power systems engineering experience as an employee of a major public utility or equipment vendor is desired, in particular experience in research.
Experience and participation in standards and codes development committees is also desired.
Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and to prepare reports, proposals, publications and journal articles is required.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building, partnering, and leadership are required.
Knowledge of relevant public and private stakeholders is required.
The demonstrated ability to manage project schedules, scopes, and budgets is required.
Demonstrated ability to be a motivating force in a technical team including the ability to provide coaching and mentoring to junior members of technical staff as well as thought leadership to senior/prestigious researchers is required.
A history of leadership in program development is also desired.
Frequent travel (often weekly trips and possibly international travel) is expected in this position.

The Mississippi Mineral Resources Institute (MMRI) was established in 1972 by the Board of Trustees of the State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) in an effort to coordinate mineral-related research in Mississippi. The mission of MMRI remains to provide the public and private sectors the expertise needed to make responsible decisions regarding Mississippi's and the nation's natural resources and environmental well-being. This is accomplished by conducting research that is relevant to society and educating future geoscientists and engineers.
The CMRET is the offshore branch of MMRI. It was established by Congress in 1988 as part of the Mineral Institutes Program as The Marine Mineral Technology Center, and it was reauthorized under the Marine Minerals Resources Research Act of 1996 as CMRET. The primary objective of the CMRET is to investigate and to asses mineral resources within the US Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ) including rigorous study of the seafloor ecological conditions.
Both MMRI and CMRET work in conjunction/support, primary with the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering, and with all the other departments and research centers of the UM School of Engineering.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Assumes the leadership role on the subcontract with Mesophotic and Deep Benthic Community Restoration portfolio, funded by the Natural Resources Damage Assessment of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Assist the MMRI Director to oversee and coordinate all the ocean related research projects.
Prepares work schedules, annual work plan and project budget requests; purchases equipment, commodities and services within purchasing authority; monitors expenditures of funds allocated to project related to CMRET.
Oversees development, implementation, and management of research projects including writing proposals, planning, statements of works, budgets, scheduling, report and manuscript preparation and dissemination of information through conferences and presentations.
Participate in project meetings, lead\coordinate the project team members, and perform other research duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in Ocean Science, Hydrography, Earth Science plus at least 10+ years of exceptional relevant professional work experience and a record of research achievement conducting/leading research in ocean exploration and mapping.
Proven experience in conducting at-sea operations using Un-crewed Autonomous platforms (such as AUVs, ASVs) both for collecting bathymetric data and video data.
Proven experience in Multibeam data processing (bathymetry, seafloor reflectivity, water column backscatter) using Caris HIPS and SIPS and/or QPS Quimera
Proven experience in using the following software: ArchView GIS; IHS Kingdome; and Global Mapper,
Proven Experience using acoustic navigation systems, such as USBL and LBL including deploying mooring,

Under the supervision of Dr. Bimal Balakrishnan, the research staff will work closely with student researchers and designers to develop interactive 3D and virtual reality simulations. Candidates should have a background in a discipline like architecture, game design, visualization or computer science, and have a strong skillset in 3D modeling, texturing, lighting, animation, and game engines like Unity and Unreal Engine.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
* Participate in the full cycle of game/simulation development and work collaboratively with artists, designers, and engineers to develop human-in-the-loop simulations for research and training
* Design, implement, and iterate on gameplay through rapid prototyping and feedback cycles
* Create or supervise game scripts, and storyboards with other artists
* Utilize industry standard 3D modeling, texturing, lighting, and animation software and game engine software to create visually compelling simulations, including virtual reality simulations
* Assist with usability evaluations of simulation and other human-subjects research projects
* Demonstrate simulation projects to diverse audiences through open houses, and other outreach efforts
* Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

The Hom Lab at the University of Mississippi is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to help lead a new NASA-funded project to study the biology of desiccation tolerance in microbes.

Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work well with others.
