Do hospitals hire chaplains?

By Zippia Team - Jan. 22, 2022

Yes, hospitals hire chaplains of various religions to work with both patients and their families. There are several qualifications needed to be employed by a hospital as well as a host of duties associated with the position.

Before one can become a hospital chaplain, one must be ordained by their religious group and become certified. Ordination education differs among religious organizations, but certification is granted through the Association of Professional Chaplains' Board of Chaplaincy Certification.

Once these two qualifying steps have been accomplished, the hospital chaplain can expect to serve in the capacity of a counselor as well as one who administers scripture, confession, and grief counseling. Hospital chaplains may also work with staff to serve their spiritual needs.
